For three weeks in June, more than 100 kids put about 500 T.O.Y. entries through the first round of testing, narrowing down the pack to the 63 that will move on to the next round. Those 63 toys are shipped to 15 early childhood care providers around the country, where another 1,200 kids spend more than 30,000 hours playing with and assessing the contestants. After three weeks, the kids vote for their favorites.

The Major FUN Award goes to games that make people laugh, are original, flexible and easy to adapt, are well-made, durable and easily stored, and are easy to understand and teach. Award winners are selected during monthly gatherings attended by a collection of game-players and the winning games are reviewed by Major FUN himself.
